Introduction

People of one country often don’t understand the people of another.  An  ambassador, who understands both can explain one to another.  In the spiritual realm, those who do not know God cannot understand the things of God.  As there is a difference between knowing about someone and knowing the person, so there is a difference between knowing about a religion and knowing God  One of the great challenges for  those who know God, is that they are His ambassadors.

We are Ambassadors

Being ambassadors for God is described as a statement of fact, rather than a choice.

  1. What intention does Christ have in giving us this role?

2 Corinthians 5:20 So we are Christ's ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, "Come back to God!"

What is an Ambassador?

Look at the context to find an understanding of this role.

  1. What is the basis for being an ambassador for Christ?
  2. What is the role of an ambassador?
  3. What is the message of an ambassador?
  4. Why would God choose to use ambassadors and not speak directly?

2 Corinthians 5:19-21 For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people's sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.20 So we are Christ's ambassadors; God is making his appeal through us. We speak for Christ when we plead, "Come back to God!"21 For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin,* so that we could be made right with God through Christ.

How the Lord made me an ambassador to my immediate family.

Living as Ambassadors

Here is Paul’s advice in the book of Colossians.

  1. How should an ambassador speak and act towards those who do not believe?
  2. Why is wisdom needed?
  3. What is meant by, ‘making the most of every opportunity’?
  4. What experience do you have of opportunities - taken or lost?

Colossians 4v5-6  Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity.6 Let your conversation be gracious and attractive* so that you will have the right response for everyone.

Paul talks about making the most of every opportunity.  Situations can arise where people ask about what we believe.  We can choose to be His witnesses.

We can serve people in such situations by speaking with clarity.  Clarity improves if we prepare beforehand. The ‘Becoming a Christian’ page has links to illustrations that could help talk people through what it means to become a Christian.  One could think through your story of coming to faith.  If you could briefly share that, it would help people take hold of the basic facts.  This is an example.
