Godly Attitude
Jesus is concerned about the motivations behind our actions. Our actions and even our lack of action are important because they are the demonstration of our deep attitudes and beliefs. So in the final evaluation, it is by our actions that we will be judged, but the why behind them will dictate how they are judged.
Jesus is very clear that Love is the key attitude or action of all. It is in our love that He is most interested. Yet what is love? In our age it has been reduced to an emotion, even an emotion of which we have little control. To the Lord however it is a choice that is lived out in our daily actions. These are not so much the big heroic actions that we would glory in, but the small seemingly insignificant acts of kindness that display the real character of our lives. The Quality of Love.
How we behave to others is often governed by how we see ourselves before God. Those who think that they are great and above all right tend to be inconsiderate in the way they deal with others. Jesus, though being great and in fact God, acted in humility. The contrast can hardly be more extreme. The Lord asks us to look to how we stand before Him in our attitude to others. We are pitiful and small, so we need to walk in Humility.
As we walk through life with our hearts rightly connected with God, so we begin to take on God’s values. These values start in the heart but work out in action. The actions do not follow some formula. Since they are driven from a heart attitude that follows living with Jesus, they are responsive to each situation. There is a wisdom about them that goes beyond our simplistic rules.
The Lord loves justice, so we too begin to express His justice. The world we live in is full of protecting people’s rights. These rights can be so tied up with lawyer’s words that Justice is lost. How do we show justice in a world that is concerned with control and procedure? Justice
The Lord shows mercy to us, so we too need to show mercy to others. Many in the Christian community are so conditioned against sin, that we can look for God’s judgement on people’s wrong behaviour while forgetting that the Lord forgave us all. We are taught that judgement must come to teach people not to ‘do it again.’ Where though is the grace of God, where is His mercy. How do we show mercy?
All these qualities of the Lord’s are worked out in a lifestyle. The Lord looks for us to live in a way that reflects himself. Lifestyle.
